Should Christians still practice fasting?

Fasting is a strange practice described in the Bible a few times but not really explained. We see various people in different books practice fasting at different points of history throughout the Bible’s overarching story. It is not a command, and it is not a requirement. Yet Christians have practiced it for thousands of years. Even Jesus Himself fasted:

Next Jesus was taken into the wild by the Spirit for the Test. The Devil was ready to give it. Jesus prepared for the Test by fasting forty days and forty nights.

  • Matthew 4:1-2 (MSG)

So then, what exactly is fasting, and is it still important for us today?

What is fasting?

Fasting is the practice of voluntarily not eating food or drinking anything except water for a prolonged period of time. This may be for a day only or may be for a period of several days with some small breaks at a time where some food is permitted.

Fasting is practiced by those of a number of different faiths, including Muslims, who observe fasting for the entire month of Ramadan.

The idea is simple: In bringing ourselves into an empty state, we acknowledge the need for sustenance and filling. Instead of filling with food during these moments, instead, the faithful reflect on God, pray and grow closer to Him.

Is fasting still important for Christians?

Since Jesus came to fulfill the law and make it possible for us to have eternal life through Him, we don’t need to observe practices or rituals, right? Well, technically, yes. Our salvation is done through Jesus only.

However, we can all benefit from growing closer to God. After all, if to be a Christian is to be an imitator of Christ, then we should follow His example (maybe not to the extreme of literally eating nothing for 40 days) and observe a period of fasting to grow closer to God as well.

It doesn't need to be anything formal or with a group of people during a prescribed time. You can choose to observe a fast whenever you feel it is right and healthy for your spirit, so that you may grow closer to God from it.
