Why we need to be chasing God, not just following

“Seek God while he’s here to be found, pray to him while he’s close at hand.”

  • Isaiah 55:6 (MSG)

“When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.”

  • Jeremiah 29:13 (MSG)

The Bible contains many verses like these above that encourage us to actively seek out and pursue God. There are many verses about following God as well, and it is good to follow God, but we believe that following is just the beginning; chasing is what we’re all supposed to grow to do.

What it means to chase God

For some people, there’s not much difference between chasing and following God. However, from a practical standpoint, there is a big difference between the two and how we interact with God. When we follow God, we choose to accept Him as authority, as a source of love and as an example to live by.

However, when we chase God, we seek to pursue Him actively on a regular basis. We take time every day to pray and read His Word. We stay involved with our faith communities. We share our faith with others.

All of this may seem like hard work, but it is what can naturally develop as you spend more time following God and desiring more of Him.

God pursues us

The best part about chasing God is that it is not a requirement. God loves us. He pursues us. He wants us to have access to Him and to connect with Him. We chase Him when our hearts drive us to want more of Him, but it by all means is not a requirement of our faith. If you are younger in your faith or don’t feel as committed, it is OK. God still loves you and will give you opportunities to find more of Him if you are looking.

Centerpoint Church is ready to walk with you on your faith journey

At Centerpoint, our community believes in purpose and passion, and we would love to walk with you on your journey in finding yours. We are currently going through a new sermon series titled “To Hell With Normal.” It’s all about redefining what we consider normal in life as we seek to make our lives more like the way Jesus would have them to be.

Do you want to grow in your faith or are you simply curious about who this Jesus guy is? You’re not alone. We encourage you to listen to our series online and welcome you to come to one of our Sunday morning services in Valrico, Florida.
