Feeling doubt about God? You’re not the only one

Doubt can be a hard path to go down as a Christian. Not because it’s bad to doubt, but because we feel shame about it and hide it to ourselves, making it much more difficult than it needs to be.

Look, we all have our doubts about a lot of things, including the existence or intentions of God Himself. It’s OK, He’s not going to smite or punish you for this. And, while some people might be jerks about it, people are more understanding and supportive than you might think.

Doubt is a normal part of our life and faith journey

It would be wild not to have any doubts about God if you think about it. There are some outstanding stories involving exciting miracles that we don’t see in our day-to-day lives. It can all be hard to believe.

For many of us, we grow up in Christian households and take these stories for granted. Then, when encountering them as teens or adults, we start to find things that don’t make sense or are even contradictory to what we understand about God. Thus enters doubt.

You’re not alone in your doubts

The last thing you should have to do when processing doubt is to do it alone. You might feel ashamed or even afraid of being ostracized by others. However, other people who have been where you are understand what you’re going through and can walk with you through it to help you process things.

And, while it’s not a good idea to compare yourself to other people, you should take a look below at the list of prominent Christian figures who have all wrestled with doubt in their lives to get an idea of the company you keep:

  • Mother Teresa

  • C.S. Lewis

  • Martin Luther

  • John Calvin

  • Pope Francis
