If you call yourself a Christian, it’s time to start being one online

Have you ever argued with someone online about politics? About religion? Be honest; most of us have.

It’s OK to disagree with someone and to express that, but it’s important not to let this become a path to hate, anger and division. Sadly, this happens all too frequently in social media.

We need to take a moment to remember the teachings of Jesus and remember that our behavior online is no exception to how He expects us to behave as people who call ourselves His followers.

There’s a reason that Jesus has to command us to love one another

“‘Love the Lord God with all your heart and with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy. ... Love others as well as you love yourself.’ There is no other commandment that ranks with these.”

  • Mark 12:30-31 (MSG)

This passage in Mark and similar passages in the other Gospels make it clear that the greatest command of all Scriptures is a two-parter: to love God and to love your neighbor. Jesus goes on to say that there is no command greater than these and that all other commands hang off your ability to do these two things.

Seems simple, right?

It turns out, loving each other is very difficult. Look at history. How many wars have people fought? How many slaves have been kept? How many have been denied refuge or help because of money or fear?

It seems like something in our nature — or rather, in our state of sin — makes it difficult for us to love the way God would have us love. Yet, many of us would agree that loving one another would be good, right?

It’s time to start loving your neighbor. A good place to get started is on your social media. Avoid getting into political arguments. Avoid making divisive statements or being hateful. Share positive stories. Make constructive comments. Go out of your way to tell someone that you love, respect and value them.

Jesus tells us that the world will know who His followers are by the way we love one another. We need to start doing that online as well as in our daily lives.

Centerpoint Church is ready to walk with you on your faith journey

At Centerpoint, our community believes in purpose and passion, and we would love to walk with you on your journey in finding yours. We are currently going through a new sermon series titled “Crazy Like Us.” It’s all about what we imagine Jesus would want to undo in today’s church to rebuild it to better fit His image and His teachings.

Do you feel like the church has lost its way and could use some restructuring? You’re not alone. We encourage you to listen to our series online and welcome you to come to one of our Sunday morning services in Valrico, Florida.
