What young people need to understand about finding purpose

One of the most natural parts of being a human is desiring a sense of purpose in life. Having purpose gives us something to work forward and to measure ourselves against as we go through life. However, many of us never find that clear purpose that we dream of in our youth, leaving us reeling as we become young adults and leave college to enter the real world.

Part of what makes finding purpose so challenging is that we don’t have a healthy understanding of what purpose is. If you’re feeling like you don’t have purpose in life, we encourage you to take a moment with us to reflect on some things we all need to understand about finding purpose.

Money and fame don’t define your purpose

One reason many people feel like they aren’t successful or don’t have purpose is that they have a narrow perspective of what success looks like. It’s not all about fame or money. We all see professional athletes, actors, singers and wealthy people as successful. While they are successful, this is not the definition of success.

Success and purpose in life should be more defined by what brings you personal satisfaction or joy or what you feel like God may be leading you to do.

There is nothing wrong with being normal

Along with the idea that finding purpose means striving to be rich or famous comes with the idea that being ordinary means we’ve failed. Folks, there are billions of people in the world. Billions. How many are famous? How many are rich? A very small percent.

Do you really believe that only this small percent of people are successful and the billions and billions of the rest have failed? Surely not. You need to be realistic and have some grace and patience for yourself. Set your sights on what brings you joy and seek to make that your purpose, not what some small group of people have determined success to be.

It’s never too late to achieve your goals

Feel like you’re missing out on your window to reach certain goals in life? Think again. If there is something you have always wanted to do, don’t let your age keep you from it. Find your success and purpose in pursuing your dreams and goals, no matter how old you are.

Life is a journey, and the only doors that close on it are the ones we allow to close.
