Does God change His mind?
When it comes to understanding the nuances of God, there can be a lot to unpack — especially when every church and leader has a slightly different flavor of Christianity. And, depending on the topic, the conversations have the potential to become pretty heated. Among those highly debated subjects is the topic of God’s mind and wondering if He ever changes His opinion. So, does God ever change His mind?
To understand if God changes His mind, we need to have a solid foundation about God’s character. Let’s take a look at some characteristics of God.
He is faithful
God is faithful. “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments” (Deuteronomy 7:9 NIV).
He is unchanging
God never changes. In fact, the Bible says that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NIV). That’s pretty straightforward.
He is unlimited
God is omnipotent, which means He has unlimited power. Here’s what the Bible has to say: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse” (Romans 1:20 NIV).
He is everywhere
There is literally nowhere you can go to get away from God. Ask Jonah — he spent three days in the belly of a big fish because he was running from God. God’s ability to be everywhere all at once is called omnipresence. And here’s what the Bible has to say about that:
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast” (Psalm 139:7-10 NIV).
He knows everything
God knows it all. He is omniscient. Here are some examples of the things God knows:
“Even before there is a word on my tongue, behold, Lord, You know it all” (Psalm 139:4 NASB).
“He counts the number of the stars; He gives names to all of them” (Psalm 147:4 NASB).
“But the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Matthew 10:30 NKJV).
Does God change His mind?
That’s a somewhat loaded question. Does God change His mind about natural disasters or disease? Do prayers really make a difference? Those are some tough questions to tackle. We do know that God doesn’t inflict pain and suffering. Those are a direct response to sin entering the Garden of Eden. We also know that God’s not fickle. He doesn’t toy with people.
It’s hard to quantify if God changes His mind because we’re not God. But we can glean from His character that God is steadfast, making it unlikely that God would waffle on decisions. He already knows everything already. He gives us the free will to make our own decisions, but He knows which decisions we will make.
