How does stigma affect mental health?

Stigmas reinforce feelings of exclusion and increase isolation from the help available to those with mental health struggles. A stigma is a label unfairly placed on a person. The dictionary defines it as “a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.” As a people called to love everyone unconditionally, just as Jesus did (see John 13:34-35), the church needs to be on the front line of destroying these lies that divide us.

People with mental health problems experience discrimination. According to a study published in Nursing Times magazine, people have been denied employment and accommodations due to the stigmas attached to their mental health. These experiences rob them of self-esteem, confidence and social opportunities.

We don’t just place stigmas on people with mental health struggles. As a society, we are fairly skilled at passing out labels. These labels sting and divide us. They create unnecessary barriers. The stigma itself can be the cause of mental health distress.

There is only one label you need to place on any person who stands before you, and that is Imago Dei, made in the image of God. That’s it. Let go of the others and the baggage you’ve attached to them. You and I have been called to love, and the easiest way to love the person in front of us is to understand what we have in common. Every human, young or old, fat or skinny, gender or gender-free, is made in the image of God.

Stop allowing the stigmas and labels to get in the way of fulfilling the command to love. Let’s start making a real difference in one another’s mental health and start spreading the truth of God’s love and acceptance. We have to do what is just, not just what we can justify.

At Centerpoint, we are breaking down every barrier that keeps people from the love of God. We don’t shy away from the hard questions. No matter where you are in your faith journey, you are welcome to join us! There is a seat for you at our table.
