Resurrecting Jesus in the midst of spiritual doubts
When it comes to spirituality, there are a lot of unanswered questions. All of those unanswered questions and concerns can rattle even the strongest Christian’s confidence from time to time. But what do we do about it? Is it OK to question God and our faith? Is it OK to ask if Jesus was truly resurrected from the dead? Or will you spend eternity in hell? The short answer: Asking questions won’t send you to hell. Well, that’s good news. But you may still be frustrated and have some doubts.
To fully understand spiritual doubts, we have to comprehend what it is we’re unsure of. Do you know what parts of spirituality you struggle with? If you can’t put your finger on the issue, that’s OK. Here are some topics that people struggle with when it comes to faith.
The mystery of faith
A lot of people have doubts related to their spiritual belief system, and they chalk it all up to being a mystery. Some denominations like to embrace some of the unknowns, calling them “mysteries of faith.” Surely there are ways to know if some things are true, right? There are. In this particular instance, the answer depends on what you’re asking. If you’re asking why bad things happen to good people, the answer is because we’re all sinners and live in an imperfect world. While God can intervene and take control, that’s not His chief desire. He allows us to determine our own path.
Jesus’ resurrection
Everybody dies. That’s no secret. One way or another, we’re all going to die — and there’s no coming back from that. So, then, why do Christians claim that Jesus died and then came back to life in resurrection? That’s not even possible.
You’re not wrong. It’s not possible. Yet Jesus did it. He rose from the dead in resurrection. And the best part is that we have historical proof of this.
Doubters gonna doubt … right?
Let’s talk about doubt. Here’s the truth: We’re all doubters at some point. And, you know what, that’s OK (to some degree). If you’re struggling in your faith, here are some things you should know about doubt:
It’s normal. That’s right, it’s normal to have doubts when it comes to faith. The Bible is filled with people who doubted. Remember Thomas? He doubted that Jesus was resurrected until he physically put his finger in Jesus’ nail holes. He sure did believe after he felt those scars.
Jesus showed compassion. When people doubted in the Bible, Jesus didn’t chastise or scorn them. He did just the opposite. Jesus showed them love and compassion and gave them patience. He encouraged those who doubted Him to take a closer look to see more clearly. Take Thomas again for example, Jesus wasn’t rude or condescending. He simply looked at Thomas and said, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” (John 20:27 NIV).
Doubt comes in all shapes and sizes. Whether you’re hung up on whether Jesus actually rose from the dead, why bad things happen to good people or something else, doubt happens. It’s so easy to get caught up in the idea that we can know something with 100% certainty. Sure, we can know some things, but there are others that we just don’t have an answer for yet. God doesn’t ask us to have a huge, mountainous faith. He only asks that we have the faith of a mustard seed. (Go ahead and Google the size of that. It’s the smallest of all seeds, measuring at 1 to 2 millimeters.)
Having doubts and questions can really shake up your life. But do you have the tiniest amount of faith and trust in Jesus? If you do, keep asking those questions and seeking answers. If you’re not sure, consider reaching out to us at Centerpoint Church. We’d love to chat with you.
