The top 5 hallmarks of walking a modern Christian path

Being a Christian in this modern world is no joke. It’s hard to balance modern-day morality with the biblical truths. And it doesn’t help that there are about a million different flavors of Christianity in this day and age. So, how can you walk the Christian path in this modern world — you know, “be in the world, but not of it”? That’s hard to do. Here are some tips to get you thinking:

  • Study the Bible. First and foremost, study the Bible. Perhaps this wasn’t the answer that you were looking for, but it’s the response that will most accurately guide you. Take a deep dive into God’s Word to determine how He wants you to live, what He wants you to do and how He wants you to behave. Spending time in the Bible is akin to grabbing coffee with a friend. This is how you grow in your relationship with Jesus, and, as you grow, you will yearn to adjust your actions to please the Lord.

  • Give gracefully. Sure, you want to help those in need (see the next point!), but that’s not what we mean here. Give gracefully to the church. What? The last thing the church needs is your support. They have plenty, right? Maybe. But your gifts of time or money may be what makes a difference in a kid’s life who got the chance to go to summer camp. Or, maybe, your donation helped buy a young single mom groceries for the week. Consider giving gracefully to your church.

  • Help those in need. Lend a helping hand to those who need it. What does this look like? Well, that’s really up to you. Maybe you’d like to spend your time volunteering at a soup kitchen or building homes for veterans. Or, perhaps, you could give some food to the homeless person on the corner. Or, donate those extra clothes (or the income you make selling them) to someone who needs help. You can even just drop dinner off at a friend’s house after a tough day. The point is to find ways to be helpful to those around you.

  • Manage your money well. Part of living a modern Christian life (or just a Christian life in general) is learning to manage your money well. Once you understand that everything we have is a gift from God (hint: You’ll get to this point by studying the Bible), it’s easier to be more conscious about how you spend your money. Consider learning how to budget so that you can be a good steward of the money God has blessed you with. And, if things are tight, a budget will help you find extra pennies. It may sound cliche, but the truth is that God will always provide for our needs. Check out Matthew 6 if you need some encouragement on this front.

  • Embrace healthy living. Did you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 6:19)? That’s right, our bodies are not our own (despite what the modern media likes to proclaim). Our bodies belong to Jesus. And that means that we should have a vested interest in taking care of our bodies. Strive to keep your body healthy by eating nutritious foods and getting active regularly.

Living a modern Chrisitian life may seem impossible — especially when the world makes sin seem so fun and accepting. It’s difficult to live a Christian life when the world doesn’t look kindly on Christians. We get it. We’re here to help you walk the straight and narrow while bridging the gap to connect with those who are nonbelievers.
