What does pro-life mean? Hint: It's not just about abortion
Most people hear the word “pro-life,” and they immediately think there’s about to be a debate about abortion. Yet there is far more to believing in the sanctity of life than being troubled by abortion.
So, what does being pro-life really mean, then? One answer is that it means being willing to help people find what they need to live their lives here on Earth. It also means working to help them find out how they can embrace the eternal life that God offers. There are many issues out there in the world that fall into one or both of these categories, and many of these issues are ones that should concern Christians greatly.
Three issues that illustrate what pro-life really means:
Modern slavery — It’s unfortunate, but it’s hard to deny the role that slavery played in the history of our country. Yet far too many people think that slavery is something that has died out. The reality is that slavery is still alive and well even today.
Many of the up to 30 million people who are currently trapped in slavery around the world were duped into it by traffickers with the promise of a job and better life. Finding ways to fight back against modern slavery is definitely a pro-life choice.
Migrant crises — There are many areas of the world that are dealing with millions of migrants who are fleeing wars, poverty and poor living conditions. More than 2,500 people have died while trying to cross into Europe to escape violence in North Africa, the Middle East or Syria.
Even the U.S. isn’t immune, as the crisis with migrants on the southern border shows. Helping migrants to find a safe and prosperous life is exactly what pro-life means and one of the founding principles we claim for our country.
Clean water — Do you have trouble finding clean water to drink? Hopefully, the answer is no, but there are millions of people around the world who would answer yes to this question. This is a massive issue. After all, without water, it’s just not possible to maintain the life of people or the crops and animals they depend on for survival. Christians can take a pro-life position by advocating for, working with and donating to clean water organizations.
