Who has your heart? No, who really has it? Let me phrase it this way: where does all your time, money and resources go? The Bible says that “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matthew 6:21, ESV).”

Let me ask again. Who has your heart?

In Matthew 22:36-37, Jesus was asked, “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” And he replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.”

Our hearts belong to God. But sometimes we let other things take first place.

Is your heart committed to relationships?

Relationships are not bad. In fact, you and I were created for community. But when those relationships become our central focus then we are off balance. Our first priority when it comes to relationships is the one we have with God.

Adam and Eve walked with God in the Garden. When sin entered their lives, they fell apart from God and one another. Just like Adam and Eve, when we do not love God with all of our heart, we fall apart. Our earthly as well as our heavenly relationships falter.   

If God is the God of our hearts then our relationship with him is the one that matters the most.

Is your heart tied to finances?

How often do your thoughts drift to money? You can’t serve two masters (Matthew 6:24), God and money. You have to shift your thinking and your desires to be in line with those of your Creator. Your mind can not be focused on finances, living paycheck to paycheck, upping the total of your bank account or on acquiring stuff and also focused on God.

Is God in charge of how you spend your money or is your money in charge of how you live your life? You and I are stewards of the stuff we have.

Money, and what it can buy, is the number one competitor for your heart. No matter how much you have there will always be a desire to have more. Instead, God asks you to flip your finances and give rather than hoard. When God has control of your heart, the first thing you do with your money is to ask, “how can I serve others and God with this gift in hand?”

God owns it all, do not let what you’ve already been given power over consume you.

Is your heart aching for acceptance?

Often, we allow other things, stuff and people to take up residency in our heart. We long for acceptance and it shows. There is a hole you and I try to fill with stuff and people. I’m here to tell you it will never be filled with material things or earthly relationships. There is only one who can satisfy the longing of your heart and that one is God.
