What does it mean to share your blessings with others?

Tell those rich in this world’s wealth to quit being so full of themselves and so obsessed with money, which is here today and gone tomorrow. Tell them to go after God, who piles on all the riches we could ever manage — to do good, to be rich in helping others, to be extravagantly generous. If they do that, they’ll build a treasury that will last, gaining life that is truly life.

— 1 Timothy 6:17-19 (MSG)

God teaches us through the Bible multiple times that money is temporary and that our generosity toward others is a blessing to them. Jesus takes this a step further and says that when we help those in need like beggars, widows and orphans, it’s as though we’re helping Him.

However, giving away money, time or materials goes against a lot of what our culture practices. In the Western world, the pursuit of personal success is the main drive of many people’s lives. The idea of sharing your blessings with others means to sacrifice what you have, which can hinder your ability to be wealthy, have the nicest car or have the largest house. Yet God asks us to forgo these material dreams and to invest in His beloved creation instead.

Why is it good to share your blessings with others?

God tells us it’s good to share your blessings, but if you don’t believe in Him or have doubts about what the Bible teaches, then you understandably might not see the merit of this teaching. However, we think there are intrinsic benefits to being generous that are evident, such as:

  • Giving helps others — When we give to others, we can help them do something that might seem easy and routine to us but would be difficult for them. Sharing your blessings with others might mean giving money to an organization that helps orphans receive good housing and education. It might mean helping a homeless person get a meal. It could even be a bit closer to home, such as helping a friend or family member who’s going through a hard time. Even the smallest genorsities can have a large impact on others.

  • Giving increases your personal outlook — Sharing your blessings with others increases your sense of self-worth and creates a positive impact on your life. Not that the sole reason of giving to others should be self-focused, but it is nice that it feels good to share.

  • Giving begets more giving — When people see others being generous and sharing their blessings, they’re more inclined to do the same. The person to whom one shares their blessings with are likely to pay it forward to others when they’re in a position to do so. A world where everyone is more generous and charitable to one another is a better world, so why not start the chain reaction by sharing your blessings with someone in need today?
