Christianity and health care in America: What should we think?
Oh great, an article about health care, you’re thinking.
Well, sorry, we have to do it. It’s important to think about health care from a Christian lens because too many of us approach it from a political worldview. We know it’s not easy to talk about, and we know there will be some things we’ll say that you might not like, but we want to frame our approach to life through Jesus’ example.
And it doesn’t look like America is following Jesus’ example when it comes to caring for the sick and the poor.
Christians are supposed to care for the sick and poor. Plain and simple.
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Enter, you who are blessed by my Father! Take what’s coming to you in this kingdom. It’s been ready for you since the world’s foundation. And here’s why:
I was hungry and you fed me,
I was thirsty and you gave me a drink,
I was homeless and you gave me a room,
I was shivering and you gave me clothes,
I was sick and you stopped to visit,
I was in prison and you came to me.’”

What does this mean for Christians today?
It means that we do not neglect the health and well-being of another person because of their socioeconomic class. We don’t let someone die of an infection because they do not have insurance. We do not stand for drug companies gouging the prices of life-saving medication that is cheap to make, such as insulin.
It’s remarkable how many people profess to follow Jesus and His teachings yet foam at the mouth with anger when asked to support a system that protects everyone regardless of their financial situations.
Would it really be so bad for us to contribute our money to help the poor, sick, orphaned and widows have a better life? Jesus didn’t think so. And neither do we.
