Three healthy ways to deal with a breakup

Breakups are almost never easy. Whether you’re the one who initiated it or are the one who has had the bomb dropped on them, it’s important to find healthy, positive ways to move on from a breakup for the sake of your mental well-being.

Healthy ways to go through a breakup

  1. Be honest with yourself — Many of us are prone to try to hold our chin up and push past the pain. We might pretend it doesn’t even exist. This is no way to move on from the pain; it only prolongs the pain.

Instead, we need to be honest with ourselves and acknowledge the pain. This might be hard to do because we might not want to admit the other person could have hurt us so much, but acknowledging the pain is the first step toward healing from it.

  2. Actually try to move on — Don’t wallow. At least not for long. Sure, take that moment to feel sad, cry it out and binge “Friends”while eating an entire pizza, but don’t let this become your new day-to-day life. The only one who can pick up the broken pieces in your life is you, and it’s up to you to get started.

Don’t wallow in the pain. Acknowledge it and figure out how to move on as you process it. Find activities that give your mind something new to focus on. Help in your church or community. Go for frequent hikes or bike rides. Pick up the guitar. Do something that is active and allows your mind to process while you heal from the breakup.

  3. Lean on your community — Just because things are over between you and your partner, it doesn’t mean you are alone. Look for support in your friends, family and church groups. Your community may be more willing to be there for you than you might think. Lean on them, and let them comfort you and walk through your pain with you.
