Three reasons Christians should read more

We all know that person who takes a petty pride in reading. When a group of friends talk about their favorite shows, that one guy perks up and goes, “I don’t watch TV. I READ.” While this kind of literary showboating is annoying, the reality is, reading is good for us. It doesn't mean we shouldn’t allow ourselves time to enjoy a television show, but we should make the time to read more if we want to feel rested and grow as people.

Why Christians should read more

  1. What we read is important — What we expose ourselves to regularly and feed our brains with can impact us and change us. Do you spend a lot of time on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok every day? That changes you. Our brains literally only have so much space for focus and memory, and when we feed it with garbage, then what does that do to our minds?

Take more time to read something meaningful, substantial or even relaxing. Try to expose your mind less frequently to toxic platforms and hateful material.

  2. A reading schedule can be a form of rest — One of the Ten Commandments given by God to Moses is to honor the Sabbath day. The Sabbath day is a day of rest. It is a day in which people should not work and should focus on restful activities for themselves and for the purpose of remembering God.

These days, work culture looks different than that of an agricultural society, and we all work on different days and schedules. However, we should all pursue periods of rest so that we may feel more whole and healthy. One way to get some regular peace and quiet time is to try to find a regular time in your schedule to go somewhere quiet and read.

  1. Reading Scripture helps us grow closer to God — While there are millions of books to choose from for reading material, one you can always turn to is the Bible. Throughout your life, the way you read the Bible can change. It’s like a new book almost every time you read it.

When you read Scripture, not only are you feeding your mind with something more substantial than social media, but you are also growing closer to the Lord in the process.
