Four tips for finding joy when it seems like there is no joy to be found

Joy can sometimes feel like a commodity these days. The pandemic restricts what we are able to do and limits our ability to enjoy spending time with friends and family in person. However, just because it is sometimes difficult to experience joy in ways we normally would, it doesn’t mean we can’t find joy.

If you’re looking for help in finding joy, try following these four tips:

1. Appreciate what you have

We know it may sound cliché, but when is the last time you reflected on your life and appreciated what you have? It’s hard to experience joy when you’re focused on everything that is negative or unattainable at the moment. But, if you can take a moment and think of all that you have to be grateful for, you may find joy in it.

2. Let go of control

A major point of stress for many of us is feeling like we’re out of control. Maybe it’s time we all realize that we really don’t have much control in general, not just during the pandemic. Take a moment to reflect on life and recognize how much is outside of your control. Rather than letting this stress you out, learn to lean into it and relax.

We all have days that feel out of control, but we cannot let that control the one thing we have control over: ourselves. And when it’s all said and done, all control belongs to God anyway, so try to find joy in that!

3. Take comfort in your alone time

Take a moment to spend time alone. Even if you have a spouse or children, it is important to set aside some time to be alone to relax. We’d encourage disconnection during this time too. Eliminate distractions like the smartphone or social media. Focus on yourself and your rest. Spend time connecting with God or reflecting on yourself. Meditate. Nap.

Whatever feels most relaxing and holistic, do it.

4. Seek joy in the Holy Spirit

Joy is a gift of the Holy Spirit. We can foster joy as we seek a deeper connection with God. Believe in His goodness and place your hopes in Him, and you can experience joy rooted in the Holy Spirit instead of in yourself.
