Having trouble finding a place to belong? Here are some thoughts to consider

Enjoying companionship and community with other people is one of the many great joys of life. That’s what makes it even more painful when you feel like you don’t have a place to belong.

If you’re having a hard time finding a place to belong, we’d like to give you some hope. It’s not that there isn’t anywhere you can feel like you belong. It’s just that you haven’t found it yet. But you can, and we hope to help by providing some questions you should be asking yourself if you’re looking for a place to belong.

Are you being yourself?

Probably the main reason people struggle to find a place to belong is that they are not being themselves. For example, you may see some people or a group you think you want to be a part of, so you fake it to try to fit in. This is more transparent than you may think, and it can result in the group potentially excluding you.

Instead of changing yourself to fit in somewhere, remain true to yourself and find people who accept you as you are. And keep in mind, this isn’t to say that you should not try to grow or should hang around toxic people. If you are trying to grow or make positive changes in life, you can find people who accept you for making this effort, rather than hanging out with toxic groups who want to hold you back or look down on you for not being where they are.

Are you thinking outside the box?

If you’re having a hard time finding a place to belong, you might not be thinking outside the box. For example, if you have only found community in church groups in the past but recently moved and cannot find a new place to belong, maybe you should look beyond just church groups.

The internet is a great place to start building community. Think of what you find fun and interesting or are passionate about. Then, look online for meetups or events in your area centered around these passions. For example, if you like to play tabletop games, you can look online to find a local gaming community that you could join.
