Three reasons to regularly ask, "What does God want from me?"
You’ve been there before — that season of life where everything is about to change. Maybe you’re about to embark on a cross-country move. Or, perhaps, you’re contemplating a career change or just received a major promotion. Maybe you’re about to get married or welcome a new baby into your family. Or, in many cases, the change isn’t a happy one, but one of heartache and despair such as the death of a loved one or a life challenge that you just don’t understand. The fact remains — your life is about to change or has changed in a big way and now you’re asking, “What does God want from me?”
It’s during these seasons of life that we should take a moment and pause. To take a breath and ask, “What does God want from me?” We should take time to regularly check in with Jesus to determine what He wants from us. Here are three reasons why you should regularly ask, “What does God want from me?”
God wants us to know Him
To know God’s will for our lives, we need to spend time praying and reading the Bible. By doing so, we grow our relationship with Christ, learning more about his nature and character, which allows us to have a clearer direction in our lives for what God wants from us.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 (NIV)
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 (NIV)
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)
He has a plan
Taking time to check in with God is important because He does have a plan for our lives. Whether you’re crying out to Jesus in heartbreak or taking a giant leap, pray and ask God to reveal His plan for your life in this moment.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:11-13 (NIV)
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 (NIV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
Jesus wants us to have freedom
It’s not a cliche. When we truly submit to the will of God, we find freedom in our own lives. Jesus wants us to have this freedom. Here are some verses to help you discern what God wants from you:
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1 (NIV)
“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” Galatians 5:13 (ESV)
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NIV)
