Why you shouldn’t let your desires define who you are

Do you have desires in life that are part of what drives you every day? Of course you do. We all do. We ask because we want you to start thinking about them now as you continue reading.

It’s important to recognize our desires and what drives us because all of it is what competes for our identity.

Our identity is at the core of who we are. It forms as we answer some of the deepest questions of our souls:

  • Am I enough?

  • Am I keeping up?

  • Does what I do matter?

  • Am I missing out?

  • Do they see me how I see me?

Look. Having a desire to succeed, progress and make accomplishments is good. However, when we start to measure our worth by how we answer those questions, we’ll always come up short. We’ll always find something we’re unhappy with and allow it to affect our self-value.

It’s time to stop misplacing our identities

When we misplace our identities, we overextend our capacities to live fulfilling lives. Instead, we are never satisfied because we never feel like we’re enough. Sadly, this pace of life is what many of us consider normal.

It’s time to stop considering this normal.

What needs to be normal is that each of us feels like we’re enough. Yes, we can push ourselves to be better or do better, but not at the cost of our own sanity, happiness and spirituality. Not at the cost of those we love.

“Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. Saving is all his idea, and all his work. All we do is trust him enough to let him do it. It’s God’s gift from start to finish! We don’t play the major role. If we did, we’d probably go around bragging that we’d done the whole thing! No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has gotten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.”

  • Ephesians 2:7-10 (MSG)

God has done the work to make us whole in Him. He tells us we’re good enough and we don’t need to do anything to work for it. We join Him in His work as we put our faith and trust in Him, not to earn His faith or trust.

We need to stop pushing ourselves beyond our capacities to prove something to ourselves or others. We’re all good enough. Give yourself a break. Take more time to rest and feed your spiritual life. If you’re not sure where to start, the Centerpoint family is here for you.
