Finding friends when you’re an adult

Making friends when you’re a kid in school or even in college seems to come naturally. Sure, some of us aren’t as popular as others, but when it’s all said and done, we all have probably found some people and formed a connection and a friend group. Now, fast-forward a few years into adulthood. Suddenly, making friends is a whole new challenge.

If you feel the pain of this video, then you know exactly what we mean.

However, just because making friends as an adult is a challenge, it doesn't mean it’s impossible. Forming friendships is a vital part of life and your mental well-being. We believe it’s important to be surrounded by people you can learn, grow and laugh with, so here are a few tips that can help you find as you seek to make some friends as an adult.

Making friends as an adult

  • Find groups with similar interests — One of the best ways to make friends as an adult is to find groups in your local area that have shared interests. Do you like to play games? Head to your local gaming store and get plugged in with the people there. Do you like to exercise? Join a small-group fitness class. Like to read? Hop on Facebook and look for a reading club in your area.

The opportunities are there. You just need to look in the right places.

  • Get out of your comfort zone — We wonder how many times people miss out on a friendship opportunity with each other because neither made a move. Kind of sounds like dating, doesn’t it? Well, in a way, approaching someone about moving from an acquaintance to a friend kind of requires that boldness.

Now, we’re not saying to approach someone awkwardly and say, “Hi, I want to be your friend.” However, if there is someone you are acquainted with you want to get to know better and potentially become friends with, invite them to grab a drink or watch a ballgame or enjoy an activity you think you’d both like.

  • Use an app — Whether you’ve used it or not, you’ve probably heard of the popular dating app Tinder. Well, did you know there are apps like that for finding friends? Meetup, Bumble and other apps make it easy for people to connect with other people in their area who have shared interests and could become friends.

  • Plug in with a faith-based community — Healthy faith-based communities are filled with people who strive to care for one another and grow and laugh together. If you visit Centerpoint Church for one of our services, you’ll have the opportunity to meet with a wide variety of people who are all eager to get to know you for who you are.
