Taking a moment to rest on God when we’re tired
Life is busy. Yeah, that’s no surprise, is it? Any adult with responsibilities knows that life can feel overwhelming at times. For many of us, it feels overwhelming more often than we would like.
Why is this? Why does life feel so busy all the time? Is this what it means to be an adult? Is this how we were designed?
We don’t think so. We think people are equipped to live at a more gentle pace, but our expectations of ourselves and others’ expectations of us drive us beyond our capacity. As a result we often feel burned out and overwhelmed.
What is a surprise is that this pressure comes in many forms you might not be expecting. Sure, work and family responsibilities can be heavy, but have you thought about the pressure you put on yourselves with social media? With keeping up with trends? With constantly hustling to be successful, to be noticed, to be the best?
All of this takes a massive toll on us during the best of times, let alone during a pandemic and politically tumultuous season. We need to learn how to give ourselves a break, and we need to know where to turn when we’re feeling overwhelmed.
Leaning on God when we’re tired
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me — watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
One of the greatest promises Jesus gives to us is that we can lean on Him when we’re tired. When you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can turn to His Word for rest, hope and wisdom. You can pray to help still your mind and connect with the Creator of the universe. You can use His word as direction for your life, for treating yourself better, and for loving God and your neighbors as He wants us to do.
Reaching out to God is free and accessible to anyone. All you need to do is call on Him when you are weary and He will give you hope.
