Five keys to spiritual growth

Spiritual growth simply means that we are growing closer to God. The Christian journey never ends; instead, it is a continual progression toward a deeper relationship with our Creator. Just as in our relationships with one another, there are steps we can take to strengthen our relationship with God. Following are five keys to spiritual growth:

1. Love and commitment

Love plays a big role in spiritual growth. Why? Because all throughout Christ’s life on earth, He demonstrated to us how much God loves us and how much we are called to love others. Having a heart that is open and willing to love God and to love our neighbors is essential for spiritual growth. It is how we have been called to identify ourselves as Christ-followers.

Love isn’t easy. It isn’t a warm, fuzzy feeling. Instead, it is a commitment. We are to love God and others even on the days we don’t feel like it. As we grow closer in our walk with God, our love for others will begin to mirror Jesus’ love.

2. Humility

We all make mistakes and need forgiveness. Knowing that there will always be areas in your life in need of work will keep you humble. There is only one who is perfect, and that is God. Understanding our own flaws and humbly admitting that we need help is vital to spiritual growth.

The first step forward is always admitting there is a problem in the first place.

3. Patience and trust

You and I live in a world of instant gratification. That is not how God operates. All of time and space is at His disposal. There is a bigger picture at play than one person (see humility). Understanding that God is not at your beck and call to grant wishes. Sometimes we hold on to past hurts, believing promises from God that were never made. Let go and trust God to let all things work out in His timing.

4. Your time

Any good relationship requires a commitment of time. Get involved in a community group, find a good Bible study (here’s a few from Beth Moore) and serve the people God places in your path.

5. Honest communication

No strong relationship is built on lies or half-truths. Be honest with God. Let Him know what you are feeling and where you struggle in your day-to-day life. Ask the hard questions and be willing to receive hard truths.

At Centerpoint, we encourage the hard questions. We want you to explore your faith. Join us every Sunday, online or at one of our two locations
