Do dreams come from God?

Everyone has many different types of dreams, but in this case, we aren’t talking about the type you have while you’re sleeping. We’re talking about places you want to go, people you want to meet and actions you want to take.

All of us have dreams about these things. Some of us dream about taking a trip to places where our ancestors came from. Others want to meet their favorite authors or help the rainforest. Such dreams may seem entirely noble and even motivated by God, but how can we really be sure that our dreams come from God? Here are three steps you can take to help ensure that the dreams you act on are the ones God is calling you to:

1. Talk and listen to God.

Most Christians don’t have any trouble talking to God, but we may need to remind ourselves to take the time to listen to Him, too. Before you decide to act on a dream you have, take plenty of time to commune with the Lord. Pour your heart out to Him and listen to how He responds to you, for as Proverbs 1:5 (ESV) tells us:

Let the wise hear and increase in learning,

and the one who understands obtain guidance

2. Go to others for counsel.

If you’re asking yourself if your dreams come from God, you should also seek advice from others whom you trust and who are strong in their faith. But that doesn’t mean seeking counsel only from people who will support your dreams. It means seeking it from those who may not support a particular change you’re making. That way you can get multiple takes on your dreams and have a broader base of counsel to base your decisions on.

3. Remain calm.

It’s not easy to stay calm when you’re thinking about doing something you’ve dreamed about, but it’s still good advice. Remaining calm gives you the time to decipher God’s true path for you at this stage in your life. The Scriptures counsel us to do exactly this when they say:

If one gives an answer before he hears,

it is his folly and shame. (Proverbs 18:13 ESV)

As this passage shows, remaining calm and taking the time to meditate on your decision can save you from the embarrassment of telling people you’re going to do something and having to retract it later.
