Loving others and living with differences

Jesus said what mattered most was that we were to love and sacrifice for others in the same way that He did. When we are willing to surrender ourselves on this level, God moves in ways we could never imagine. We are called to love others regardless of our differences because what we have in common is much stronger than anything that divides us. What is that one similarity? It is that we are all made in the image of God. The truth is that God loves each and every one of us, regardless of whether that love is returned to Him.

Love is the gospel, and Jesus is the example of what that love looks like. His life, death and resurrection was a legacy of love. So then why is it so difficult for us to love others and live with differences?

We live in a world with many different types of people who share the same space. Various belief systems, political views, cultural backgrounds and family traditions merge. It’s not easy to love as Jesus loved; after all, it cost Him His life. We live in communities that do not share our beliefs, values or even our understanding of morality. But that does not negate our responsibility to obey Jesus.

Our commitment to follow Jesus and to love as He loved is not a responsibility held by those who do not know Him. We cannot punish others for not keeping commandments that were not given to them. Jesus said, “This is how everyone will recognize that you are my disciples — when they see the love you have for each other” (John 13:35 MSG).

We weren’t told to avoid those with differences; we were told to love and live amongst them.

At Centerpoint, we are breaking down every barrier that keeps people from the love of God. We don’t shy away from the hard questions. No matter where you are in your faith journey, you are welcome to join us! Atheist, agnostic or Jesus-follower, there is a seat for you at our table.
