Shaking off the aftermath of rejection

You and I were created for relationship. We were not created to live on our own, but the truth is rejection happens. People tell one another every day, “You are not enough.” They do it to friends, spouses, children, parents and peers. It is communicated through the use of pornography, the pain of divorce, the death of a loved one, illness, bullying, unintentional slights and outright abandonment.

The feelings that are left in their wake cling to us and follow us wherever we go.

The truth about rejection

The truth is that rejection is a part of life for every life. It’s not about if it will happen but instead, when it will happen.

When we focus on rejection and abandonment, we carry unhealthy feelings into the future. But we don’t have to. Focusing in on the moments when a person says to us, “you are not enough,” is not healthy. Of course we are not enough for another person. No one person can fill another’s needs. We were created to partner alongside one another not to become emotionally codependent on one another.

Human companionship is a beautiful gift but if it is our everything it will fail us. When we focus on rejection we lose sight of the strength and power we have each been given.

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” - Ephesians 3:14-19, ESV

God is the one who is your origin and source. You can not face wholeness without being rooted and established in God’s love.

How to shake off rejection

How do we not fall apart when being rejected? It requires being rooted in God. We ground ourselves in Scriptures and in the love that God pours out on us. It doesn't matter who rejects us when we know that we rest in God’s arms.

Rejection will come. Prepare your heart by rooting yourself NOW in God’s love. Establish yourself in that love! Spend time in Scriptures, understanding and memorizing the words you find there. Seek out knowledge of God now and the love we were given through Jesus Christ so that when rejection and difficult times do come, because they come for us all, you will stand firm in the love of God and ready to weather any storm.
