What can an individual Christian (or church) do to further public health?

The CDC Foundation defines public health as “the science of protecting and improving the health of people and their communities.” That’s all we really want right now, right? To have healthy and thriving families, friends and communities. So how can we — as Christians and the body of Christ — further public health?

When it comes to health care, the church has been at the heart of helping people since biblical times. In fact, 27 out of the 37 miracles recorded in the New Testament involve healing the sick. Jesus is known for His miracles, for showing love to those who need it most (hint: that’s all of us) and furthering public health

Let’s be honest: The Bible doesn’t spell out whether we should take the jab and get the COVID-19 vaccine to help with public health. The Bible does give us solid examples to follow regarding helping those in our communities. Here are some lessons from the Bible that can, hopefully, help guide you in how you can further public health.

God calls us to be kind

You would think that being kind comes naturally to Christ followers, but that’s not always the case. We are human, after all. When we interact with people, it’s important to remember that we’re representing our Savior — the One who died for our sins. If we’re unkind to people, why would anyone ever be interested in learning more about Jesus and who He is? Here’s what the Bible has to say about being kind:

  • “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Galatians 6:9-10 (ESV)

  • “In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:16 (CEB)

  • “Don't withhold good from someone who deserves it, when it is in your power to do so.” Proverbs 3:27 (CEB)

God asks us to care for our neighbor

That’s right. Jesus asks us to go beyond just being kind and to actually care for those around us. It’s so easy to get caught up in the thought process of “that’s not my responsibility” and completely check out. Jesus has called us to do more, including furthering public health. Here are some points in Scripture that detail how Jesus wants us to treat others:

  • “The second most important command is this: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.’” Mark 12:31 (ERV)

  • “This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you.” John 15:12 (CEB)

  • “Instead of each person watching out for their own good, watch out for what is better for others.” Philippians 2:4 (CEB)

Seek God first

Think you’re ready to make a decision about how you can further public health or whether you should get the COVID-19 vaccine? Ask yourself this question: Have I prayed about it? Above all, before we make any decisions, we should pray and seek God’s guidance and wisdom. Here are some places in the Bible that talk about asking God for help in making decisions:

  • “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5 (ESV)

  • “Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.” Psalm 86:11 (NIV)

  • “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

We can’t tell you how to specifically further public health, but we can encourage you to ask Jesus for guidance.
