Stop defining yourself by how busy you can be

What is one of the first questions people ask each other when they first meet? Besides, “What is your name?” of course. If you guessed “What do you do for a living,” you’re probably right. One of the first questions we ask someone else is what they do for a living because, often, what we do for a living is part of what defines who we are.

And it may surprise you to hear that what you do for a living actually extends beyond your job. What you do for a living is what you do for a living. Do you spend time raising the kids all day? Do you spend all your free time playing video games? Bingeing Netflix? Browsing social media or crafting captivating Instagram photos?

What we pour our time into becomes what defines us. However, when we pour our time into so much that is for work or entertainment rather than enriching ourselves, we become worn down, anxious and overwhelmed.

Finding the best versions of ourselves outside of the busywork

When we keep ourselves preoccupied with work and entertainment all day, we are costing ourselves the best version of ourselves. The worst in us comes out when we’re hurrying, busy, overwhelmed or anxious.

We need to create more time for ourselves to relax and to invest in ourselves. Find hobbies that challenge you to become better at something, or read books that open up your worldview or help you grow spiritually.

For some people, this takes form as a Sabbath day. While we encourage you to take a full Sabbath — or rest day — we also encourage you to make small moments in your everyday life to get some rest and fulfilment.

Centerpoint Church is ready to walk with you on your faith journey

At Centerpoint, our community believes in purpose and passion, and we would love to walk with you on your journey in finding yours. We are currently going through a new sermon series titled “To Hell With Normal.” It’s all about redefining what we consider normal in life as we seek to make our lives more like the way Jesus would have them to be.

Do you want to grow in your faith or are you simply curious about who this Jesus guy is? You’re not alone. We encourage you to listen to our series online and welcome you to come to one of our Sunday morning services in Valrico, Florida.
