What does it mean that man is created in the image of God?

“God spoke: ‘Let us make human beings in our image, make them

reflecting our nature

So they can be responsible for the fish in the sea,

the birds in the air, the cattle,

And, yes, Earth itself,

and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.’

God created human beings;

he created them godlike,

Reflecting God’s nature.

He created them male and female.”

  • Genesis 1:26-27 (MSG)

One of the earliest passages of the Bible in Genesis makes something very important clear to us: Mankind is created in the image of God. Ever since, mankind has debated as to what it is that this exactly means.

We won’t claim to understand God’s wisdom, but we do have some thoughts as to what it means to be made in His image. Take a look with us and see what you think for yourself.

Something of God is reflected in every human being

Every man, woman and nonbinary individual, every child, every skintone, and even, every person of a different faith … All people are made as a reflection of God. This isn’t something like a physical reflection like when you look in a mirror. But it’s in our essence.

We all have the capacity to love, to be kind, to be humble and to serve. These are qualities of God that reflect His image in us when we act on them. We are creatures of higher thought’ those who possess wisdom and reason. None other on Earth is close to this level of thinking like mankind is. It doesn’t matter if you have the best or worst grades in class. Your thought and wisdom and reasoning are a reflection of God’s own essence.

Most importantly, being made in the image of God is to be able to interact with God. God is a three-part being who exists in constant interaction. As beings made in His image, we have the ability to interact directly with Him, thanks to the sacrifice of Jesus making it possible.
