Faith and health: The connection you never saw coming
When it comes to taking care of your health, you probably think of eating a healthy diet or exercising or visiting a doctor on a regular basis. While these certainly are important aspects of staying healthy, you might be surprised to hear that your faith also plays a role in your health.
No, having faith doesn’t grant you some divine health bonus over everyone else (although, some people do believe this). However, having faith has a practical impact that affects your health in a tangible manner.
How your faith affects your health
Behavior — Many of us who grew up in churches were taught to “treat our bodies like temples.” While we probably aren’t always the best at this, there is undeniably a connection between having faith and avoiding unhealthy habits, such as smoking or drinking too much.
Stress — Stress in your mind takes a physical toll on your body. It causes headaches and increased heart rate, and it can cause you to do things that aren’t healthy in an attempt to cope, such as drinking too much.
Prayer, meditation, and religious study can be calming and help reduce stress.Community — Did you know that having strong relationships is believed to be connected to an improved life span? Being part of a faith-based community means you are part of a group of people who love and care for you and have your best interests in mind.
Faith-based communities aren’t perfect and come with their own challenges because, after all, we’re all still just human. However, it’s hard to imagine a better environment to be a part of when it comes to building strong and lasting relationships.
